The Dreaded Plateau on the HCG Diet


This is one of the most common phone calls, text messages or emails I receive from my patients who are on the HCG Diet.

Plateaus happen and they are totally normal on the HCG Diet Protocol. I would say that a 3-4 day plateau on a 4-6 week program happens

twice for 98% of women and about 40% of men.  Please do not forget that plateaus' are not uncommon. In most cases, they will correct themselves and

some of these plateau breaking tips and/or the apple day can help things to shift sooner.  I try to remind my patients that in most cases, "You are still burning fat and simply holding water."


Ideas to Help Break that Plateau on the HCG Diet


Well, the first one is pretty obvious. If you happen to be cheating -- stop cheating. Cheating absolutely does not work on this program.  I see cheats generally create a stall for 2-4 days most of the time.

A few other tips:

  • Be sure you are drinking 2-4 L of pure water each day.
  • Be sure you are not constipated and if so please use a gentle laxative as needed.  We love the Calm by Natural Vitality - 2-3 tsp in water before bed
  • Cut down to one fruit per day
  • Leave out the broccoli, cauliflower, kale, bell pepper, mushrooms, ground beef, shrimp and orange
  • Eat only one vegetable per meal.
  • Check ALL seasonings for added sugars
  • Make sure cuts of poultry, beef and seafood are free from marinades or additives
  • Is your menstrual cycle coming or are you ovulating? Hormonal shifts can easily create a stall due to water retention. This will pass.
  • Have you added any new supplements or medications? This can also alter water metabolism
  • Try to do 15 minute bouts of gentle heart rate raising activity a couple times per day - a gentle stair climb or a brisk walk
  • Add the apple cider vinegar regimen to your day - 1 tbsp acv + 3 oz water + 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Be sure body lotion is oil free or mineral oil based

The Apple Day on Phase III of the HCG Diet


If your stall is lasting beyond 3 days you can go for an apple day. Many of our HCG Diet patients actually enjoy apple days and see a positive benefit from doing them.  On an apple day, you consume 5-6 SMALL apples in a days.  SO, you could wake up and drink lots of water until lunch and then throughout the afternoon enjoy 5 small apples.  The next day, you will hopefully be down a bit and you would have a "normal" HCG Diet Phase II menu.
